FAQ

Welcome to the FAQ's page of the site. Within here we will hopefully answer any questions that you have about the site, games and downloads... hence your frequently asked questions, answered!

Common FAQ's:

What is Abandonware?
Abandonware is a term used to describe software of any age that has been discontinued or ‘abandoned’ by its original copyright owners. Sites such as Diskworld exist to keep ‘alive’ old games that otherwise might disappear into the mists of time! - A list of oldwarez, commonly mistaken as Abandonware can be found here!

What is Emulation?
Emulation is a term that is used to describe the running of various software upon an alien machine, such as SNES games on the PC. Emulation is usually processed when a piece of software known as an 'Emulator' is ran upon an alien machine, and makes the machine think that it is the original hardware. Rom's are needed to run within Emulators as a source of software. Please note that Emulation software might not run as smoothly as if it where on the original machine. In most cases though, things run fine!

Emulation FAQ's:

How do I load a NEO-GEO game?
Whatever you do, do NOT extract the zip file containing the game ROM files. Simply place the zip file, intact, into your emulator's primary directory. If the game isn't detected, try using a different emulator and make sure you have your ROM path's setup. Still no luck? Send us an email with a thorough description of your problem and we'll see what we can do.

I've downloaded an Emulation game, now what?
Okay, well it's basically the same procedure for all Emulation games, apart from Neo-Geo (read above). All you have to do, once the file is downloaded, is extract the files to a folder, open an Emulator which was programmed for the system the game was originally for (e.g. download and use the ZSNESW Emulator if you're wanting to play a SNES game), and load up the game ROM file. Simple as that!

Misc FAQ's:

How do I download a game?
It's as simple as pie! Just use the menu on the left to go into the games section, then take it from there! Alternatively you can search for a game by entering the game name or a keyword into the search box at the top of the page and clicking 'Search'!

What file formats are used on the site?
We use both .zip and .ace files. You can download Winace from the 'Apps' section. However Winace will extract both types of file so we would recommend downloading that.

The game runs too fast, how do I slow it down?
Naturally with the speed of today’s computers and the age of some of the games on the site, some of them won't run properly on newer computers. If you find that a game is running too fast then you will need to run a program that will temporarily slow down your computer. There are quite a few different ones available but we ourselves generally use Mo'slow, (available on 'Apps' page).

Can I request a game?
Yes, please request games in the forum and we will do all that we can to find the game for you and put it up on the site. Please remember that only requests for Abandonware & Emulation are allowed. No WAREZ requests please!

Can I write reviews for games on the site?
Yes, if you would like to review a particular game that you feel you have a good knowledge of, then please submit the review to us for consideration at diskboy@diskworld.net. We cannot guarantee it will be used but if it is of sufficient quality and is needed then it probably will be.
